Ellen has 20 years of architectural design experience, including fifteen years in the Triangle with nine years as the principal of her own firm in Durham. She focuses on creating projects that contribute to vibrant urban neighborhoods that minimize sprawl, preserve natural open spaces and attract lifelong residents. Creating lively public spaces is a priority in any project undertaken. The back porch of Fowler's (now Parker and Otis), which was completed in collaboration with metal artist Al Frega, was voted one of the best places to hang out in Durham. The recently completed Durham Farmers' Market has already become a gathering space for the wholecommunity.

On occasion, Ellen teaches an architectural design studio at North Carolina State University in the College of Architecture. She also volunteers her time to promote equitable housing and is involved in several community organizations, including the Durham Community Land Trust, The Parrish Street Advisory Board and Durham Central Park. Ellen is currently president of Durham Central Park's Board of Directors. In 2006 Ellen and her husband,
Frank Konhaus, brought photographer and installation artist Georges Rousse to Durham for a public art project.

Ellen has always loved living near great rivers, the Mississippi, the
Charles, the Schuylkill, the Camden, the Seine, the Sumida and the Eno.
