Joy Weeber
speaker for Inclusivity workshop

Through the Ron Mace Center, Ms. Weeber is involved in many activities where culture and disability intersect…which is everywhere! She holds a BA in Chinese Studies, an MA in White man’s guv’ment (Public Administration) and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education…nothing linear about that path, eh? Joy’s teaching and research interests are in demonstrating how cultural beliefs influence the identity development of disabled people and vice versa...i.e. “If I can’t can get in the door, how can others know me as a creative person?”

She is an active member of the Society for Disability Studies, Association of Higher Education and Disability, and the American Counseling Association. She has served as an exhibit consultant for the Smithsonian Institution’s American History Museum exhibits on the “Disability Rights Movement” and “What Ever Happened to Polio?”, as well as the NC Museum of History’s “Health and Healing” exhibit.

As a member of the Boston-based Adaptive Environment’s “Access to Design Professions” Task Force and “Building Careers in Design” Advisory Group, she is active in making her late life partner Ron Mace’s dream come true—bringing more disabled people the design professions and creating an international network of disabled designers that can support each other’s design contributions.

Dr. Weeber is currently writing and speaking on the topic, “Everything I know about disability, I learned from the movies…or [god forbid] Jerry Lewis!”
